Mahj & Co. was born from a simple, enduring belief: the best moments in life happen around a table.
We grew up in the 1960s, in a time when connection wasn’t scheduled—it just happened. Evenings meant board games, laughter, and the kind of togetherness that didn’t need a reason. Friends became family, and family became everything. Those moments shaped us. And as we grew older, we carried that ritual forward—hosting our own game nights, passing down the joy of play to our children, just as it had been given to us.
Our story is rooted in the
people who shaped us.
Our mother, a third-grade teacher for over 30 years, believed deeply in the power of learning. At 50, she earned her master’s degree—not because she had to, but because she wanted to. That curiosity, that discipline, that respect for growth—it lives in everything we create.
Our father brought something just as important: lightness. Humor. His “Walterisms,” as we lovingly called them, were constant reminders not to take life too seriously. There was always a clever twist, a playful insight, a reason to smile. That spirit shows up in our tiles—in the small details, the unexpected references, the moments you discover mid-game.
And then there’s
where it all began.
Our great-grandmother, an immigrant from Germany, built a life from nothing in Jersey City in the late 1800s—becoming one of the first geese farmers in the area and turning a profit selling down. Her daughter, our grandmother, carried that entrepreneurial spirit forward, working at Heide’s Candy in New York City before running her own confectionery business. They didn’t just build businesses—they built resilience, creativity, and independence into our DNA.
Mahj & Co. is a reflection of it all.
A love of learning.
A spirit of play.
An instinct to build.
A belief in bringing people together.
Our tiles are designed with intention—layered with meaning, filled with subtle discoveries, and always grounded in how the game is actually played. Nothing is accidental. Every set tells a story. Because for us, mahjong isn’t just a game. It’s a continuation of everything we were given—and everything we hope to pass on.
